Luxurious historic estate

The evolution of Château St. Gerlach

.

Ancestoral past

1201

.

Traced back to 1201, a monastery was said to have been built by Gosewijn IV of Valkenburg to provide a resting place for pilgrims travelling to the grave of celebrated hermit, Gerlachus. In 1345 it became a convent for the daughters of nobility and home to nuns.

Turbulent history

Tempestuous times

Kiv Outside Château St. Gerlach.

Over the years, the property evolved and saw many changes in ownership, coming under Spanish, French and Dutch sovereignty between 1524 and 1786. The nuns left prior to French annexation and the subsequent closure of all monastries in the region. It was later purchased by the Schoenmaeckers family, then Corneli and finally, the De Selys de Fansons.

Former glory lost

Bequeathed

Bestowed to the Council of Houtherm in 1979 by the last inhabitant, Robert De Selys de Fanson, the property remained unoccupied for years and fell into disrepair.

Magnificence returned

Painstaking restoration

.

With extraordinary vision, the estate was transformed by Camille Oostwegel Snr. It underwent significant restoration, opened in 1997 and has since earnt five-star status as a magnificent hotel.
